The Field Guide
Profitable Miles Playbook
Fuel strategy, appointment etiquette, detention defense, and broker best practices—distilled from thousands of dispatched loads.
Every profitable load starts before you turn the key. The carriers who consistently outperform the market aren't necessarily running harder—they're running smarter. That means knowing the facility rhythm at your shipper before you arrive, staging correctly for the pickup window, and having your detention clock documented from minute one.
Fuel discipline compounds over time. Carriers who plan fuel stops around network pricing (using tools like GasBuddy, Pilot/Flying J apps, or DAT Fuel) typically save $0.08–$0.15 per gallon versus stopping wherever is convenient. On 120,000 annual miles at 6 MPG, that's $1,600–$3,000 back in your pocket before a single extra mile is driven.
The detention conversation is one most drivers dread—but it shouldn't be. Detention is money you've already earned. The clock starts two hours after your scheduled appointment time (confirm this on your rate con). Your dispatcher will track it, document it, and bill it. Your job is to communicate: text us your arrival time, your dock assignment, and your release time. We handle the claim.
Broker relationships matter more than most carriers realize. A dispatcher who responds quickly, keeps ETAs accurate, and never ghosts a broker builds a reputation that generates preferential load access. We manage these relationships on your behalf—but how you perform on the road feeds directly back into the quality of loads we can access for you.
Weekend staging is the most underutilized profit lever in trucking. Positioning your truck Thursday night to capture Monday's pre-booked load—rather than scrambling Sunday night—consistently yields better rates, better lanes, and less deadhead. We build this into your weekly plan by default.
Scale stops are a cost of business, but a costly surprise. We include weight estimates and common scale location alerts in every load brief for flatbed and heavy freight carriers. If you're uncertain about your axle weights post-load, call us before you roll—repositioning weight is far cheaper than a violation.
